If you’re a regular TV viewer you have no doubt seen the adverts for 1&1’s MyWebsite Builder - see ad below. This is one of the most well known and popular do-it-yourself website builders and for some businesses they do provide a viable option. What’s more, they are improving all the time, with more features added enabling you to build a very nice looking website. If you’re not familiar with this service take a look at the video below.

1&1 My Website may be the most well known self build website option but there are others that may be of interest. I’ll list a couple of the services provided by hosting companies I personally use myself. I don’t use their sitebuilder services, so can’t write with any authority on the specific services, but if they’re anything like the hosting and email services I use, they should be pretty good.

Now, you maybe wondering why I’m talking about you building your own website. If you go ahead and build your own website surely I’ve lost out? Well, yes, I suppose you’re right, but I’m not concerned and that’s why we’re different. For some businesses, in certain circumstances, a self built website may be your ideal option. It all depends on you, your business and what you want your website to achieve. If you decide you want to build your own website I’ve listed some of your options below.
Online Site Builders…
Build Your Own WordPress Website and Blog
If you want a little more control over your site and want to blog about your business, a WordPress site may be the answer.
WordPress is a CMS (Content Management System) platform and and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites (Source: Wikipedia). You have a massive choice of themes and plug-ins to use in order to decide on the look and functionality of your site.
Building a WordPress site is a lot more involved and challenging than using a online sitebuilder but there is a wealth of help and information out there on the web and it is designed to make building websites accessible to everyone.
Many web designers only build sites using WordPress and I myself build some sites using WordPress. If building a website for a small business I use a theme that is specially designed for the small business owner and has many very useful features and it is very search engine friendly, meaning you can often appear on the first page of Google in your business sector. The theme I use is the SmallBiz Theme from Expand2Web.

Build Your Own Website With Easy To Use Software
Here is another option -Web Plus X6 from Serif Software. This is the same software I used to build this site. I’m a big fan of this software and if you know your way around a computer and programmes such as Microsoft Office you will be able to build a great looking site with this software. You don’t need to know any html coding and the software is very intuitive and comes with many tutorials if you get stuck. Plus, there are many pre-built templates you can adapt for your own business. This really is a great product for anyone prepared to take a little time to build the website they want. You really are in complete control. You can update and add new pages any time you want, meaning you don’t have to wait for (or pay!) a web designer to do it for you.
